LITTLE CHURCH ON THE LANE

CLIENT: MORAVIAN EPISCOPAL CHURCH
LOCATION: CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
PROJECT TYPE: ADDITION/ RENOVATION
SIZE: 4,973 SF

The restoration of the Little Church on the Lane, a Moravian church built in 1924, gave new life to this old structure which time had took its toll on. The Chapel was originally designed to be converted into a duplex residence should the church not thrive over time. The floor system of the building was only about six inches above the ground surface which caused termite damage and sagging floors.

The interior was brought back to the original floor plan by removing walls that had been added. We removed the entire floor structure and hardwood floors and excavated the crawl space to a sufficient depth to remediate the termite problem. A donated organ was restored and placed in the main space, the original light fixtures were rewired, the pews were refurbished and new hardwood floors were installed revitalizing this once neglected church.

In addition to the restoration of the chapel, an enclosed corridor from the fellowship hall to the nursery building was added. We designed this corridor to be unobtrusive and in keeping with the hood-type awnings of traditional Moravian churches.
